"Super Advanced ASP" Class Description:
This course is aimed at people who are currently building sites and want to speed up their code, write components instead of pages, and master sessions, applications and the subtleties of the entire ASP and MTS/IIS environment.

Audience/Prior Experience:
Students are required to be fluent ASP programmers before attending this class. This class is about teaching good programmers to become excellent programmers and to get a programmers focus on speed, scalability, high re-usability and using the most efficient commands to accomplish the task. Lots of whys instead of hows. Lots of before and after samples.

Topics:  Starting at the beginning students will be shown how to take working code and make it progressively faster. They will be shown pages that run in 20 seconds and learn how to make them run in 2 seconds. They will see maintenance scripts that take many minutes to run and reduce their run times to under a minute. After focusing on speed, they will focus on the whys of how to design better code instead of just cranking out better code.

• Take a page that does database access and make dozens of modifications to speed up the page
• After modifying the page that does database access to run at full speed examine alternate methods (including caching) that approach the issue from a different angle and produce even better results.
• Build simple VB Components that illustrate how you can build components and use other languages to do the work of your ASP pages.
• Master error trapping in depth.
• Working code that is not particularly re-usable will be replaced with very re-usable code. Many architectures for coding will be presented so ASP programmers can approach the problem with many options instead of 2 or 3.
• Session issues like idle sessions, thread-locking, thread-specific storage and the effect of segmentation and cross-marshalling will be explained in CLEAR ENGLISH so everyone understands how to avoid the consequences of these memory issues.
• STA, MTA, Free-Threading will be presented in CLEAR ENGLISH and in a way that makes it possible to write code that does not perform poorly within the constraints of each memory model.
• Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) is presented from 2 standpoints: Transactional pages and components BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY how the MTS runtime environment offers services and behaviors that help scaling on NON-transactional components and pages.
• Some other up-and-coming technology are presented from an ASP coders standpoint: XML, Microsoft Message Que, WSH, ADSI and ADOX. How they specifically benefit your site and the exact tasks they simplify is discussed in very practical (no theory) terms.
