ASP.net Overview:  Differences and Improvements over Classic ASP

ASP.net 1.0 was released on February 2002 at VSLive after over 2 years of public testing. Charles Carroll has been teaching ASP.net for 2 years to public since Beta1 to ensure his class is perfected by the release of 1.0. Beta2 was "feature complete" and many were so impressed they deployed live websites with the beta. ASP.net is part of a 4 billion dollar Microsoft project to improve the quality of their core development languages ten-fold. ASP.net Improvements that we cover in this class include:

• Improved languages: All code is compiled even when written with simple editors.
• Object-orientation (even across languages) is a standard part of the system. But instead of providing you merely with object-creation and inheritance and then foisting off the laborious object building to every developer who then re-invents a variety of wheels INSTEAD a rich array of 25,000 objects make up the CLR and .NET libraries to inherit or consume.
• A rich, simpler but more powerful replacement for the Windows API and a new core set of objects that simplify web-app, desktop and NT/Win2k services.
• Advanced crash-recovery and detection and isolation of rogue code damaging the system.
• super scalable architecture with extensive caching to reduce running lots of identical code for each website visitor
• Improved database interface. All complex formatting never involves ugly LOOP or mixing HTML and database calls (.movenext and recordsets are done away with, etc.) Dataset object reduces complexity and volume of code compared to recordset model.
• Rendering model means code is run before HTML is created. This means that HTML and Code can be in different files (graphic designers work on one file, coders on another) and that the code can add and alter HTML dynamically in a declarative fashion without being mixed with HTML.
• Debugging and profiling is a dream. A whole new generation of code and GUI debugging tools within the ASP.net runtime.
• Webservices are easy to build for cross-platform calls to and from your ASP.net applications from any languages (Java, Perl, CGI, etc.)
• MSIL and the new "assembly" model makes deploying applications and versioning complexities an issue of the past.
• Webservices support means that writing a webservice that is built from from a COM or .NET component is trivial and requires a few new commands to tie existing code you have written into the webservice architecture.
• Top-notch XML support so XML apps are faster, much easier to write and maintain and require .
